Ishtar plays the traditional bellydance songs of the Middle East with clarinet, Fender Strat guitar, bass, darbuka and riqq. I love surf music and I love bellydance music. We call it BellyRock.
Radio Bastet has given me so much inspiration over the years. Thanks Marisa!

Re: Keeping the tradition alive

Awesome revisitation of Enta Omri - a song that I have heard and/or played way too many times in 20some years was finally enjoyable again!
I see that you are fundraising to record a cd - if you were here I would offer my services to you for the grand price of dinner and transportation, but then I'd probably want to join the band, too!
I am trying to convince my band that we should learn some of the lesser known tunes from the "Vintage" era, but it's not going over well... That and the instrumentation we have (Oud, Tablah, Drumkit, 2x Arabic keyboards - one that covers the bass too - doesn't really lend itself to that sound. I want that cheap Strat copy thru a cheap Sears transistor amp with the reverb all the way up playing the chop chords for the rhythms... And a clarinet/zurna player (reverb & phaser optional).
I was reminded of my ex-bandmates' band "Big Surf" when I was listening to you guys, I sometimes go to play Tablah with them when they have a dancer in - check them out here www.myspace.com/bigsurf2 and if you're ever coming thru the Twin Cities give us plenty of notice, it'd be a sure fire double bill. -

Re: Keeping the tradition alive
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 11:31 AMThank you so much for your compliments!
I really enjoy playing the classics. I only picked up the clarinet again 7 years ago, so even the classics are new to me.
My bandmates in Ishtar work so hard...we are very happy to hear positive feedback.
We would love to get out your way someday. If you ever pass through Pittsburgh, PA, we can set you up with a gig here and give you all a free place to stay at my house.
